As the New Years’ celebrations come to a close, it is time to get our personal affairs in order. DFAS just posted the “Annual Tax Statement availability.” If you are a military spouse, be sure to know your Sponsor’s correct login information ahead of time: https://mypay.dfas.mil/mypay.aspx.

Retiree 1099-R: AVAILABLE

Civilian W2: Jan 5, 2012

Active/Reserve Marine Corps: Jan 16, 2012

Army NAF Civilian: Jan 20, 2012

Active Army, Air Force, Navy: Jan 24, 2012

Many resources exist that allow you to file your taxes for free; each year installations offer free services at legal centers on base. Additionally, for the past 2 years I have used H & R Block’s free service. I am accounting-challenged and it was even easy for me. If you encounter any issues, they have a customer service center available to assist you 24/7.  It will launch later this month & we will post the official date; in the meantime, you can create your login if you haven’t already done so: www.militaryonesource.mil.

Also, Tax Slayer offers FREE Federal & State filing for military. http://www.taxslayer.com/military.

If you are a military family, there is no reason to spend your money when filing your taxes because many options exist. Installation tax services were perfect when we had less complex filings, now that we own a home, have children, and education credits, H & R Block fit our lifestyle. Find what works best for you.

If you know of additional free tax services for our military families, please share below. Happy Filing!
