Awe Inspiring
May 11, 2011Being from New Jersey, it is rare that I am speechless. The last week of my life could only be described by words like honor and class. From meeting with Senator Hagen (D-NC) at the Capitol to drinking tea at the White House, every step through that journey was filled with breath taking moments. On Thursday, I had the proud honor of finding out I was named to represent all branches of the armed forces as the 2011 Military Spouse of the Year. The event started with meeting Lt. General Willie Williams, his wife Bobbie, Mrs. Bonnie Amos, and Mrs. Liz Kent. For these accomplished members of our elite military family to come and support me, left me with a reinforced feeling that families are a priority in our Marine Corps.

I have always known that the Marine Corps knew how to set the standard: in training, in programs, even in uniforms; there is nothing quite like a Marine in Dress Blues to make you stop in your tracks. But, on Friday, I had the opportunity to attend the 8th & I Parade. The invitation included the much anticipated meeting with our Commandant of the Marine Corps. The experience is awe inspiring and the highlight of my entire life. When my husband was a young LCpl, I remember reading Leatherneck. I didn’t quite understand all of the combat talk but I did understand the greatness that encompasses the role of Commandant. General Amos is a true class act; he and his wife Bonnie accepted me into that room as though I belonged there. I stood amongst Generals, Senator Levin, and the Ambassador of Japan, yet Mrs. Amos grabbed the attention of the audience to speak of me. In a room of war heroes and news makers, she spoke of the value of the role of a military spouse and their pride.
When I began as a volunteer in the family readiness program in 2002, I could have never imagined the day would come when I would be a voice for our military spouse community. While wearing the uniform is the most honorable service to country, those of us who support the man (and woman) wearing the uniform know there are other ways of giving back. My story should be a valuable lesson; no obstacle in life can hold you back from pursuing the things you are passionate about. Your passion may be something other than family readiness programs, but whatever it is-the goal is attainable. You have the support of the United States military behind you, utilize your gift and share it with others. One team-one fight!

Hoo Rah for You!!!
I just read this and I'm thrilled for you. First, because you are a Marine spouse (whose husband is lucky to have you) and, apparently, a very good one, in light of your selection; second, because I am the daughter of a deceased career Marine who wrote for Leatherneck when the best of the best were there, and, as they say, was a Marine's Marine (he entered the Pearly Gates at 57 - way too young); and third, like my father, you are from New Jersey - he was from Belmar. HooRah to you. Maybe some day, when I get tickets for the best seat at ANY event, I'll have a chance to meet you at the 8th and I parade. My mother said she loved it when we there. Have a great year!
