The Independent Dependent

May 5, 2011
By Bianca Strzalkowski

I was married into the Marine Corps on July 27, 2001 and was issued a dependent ID card. At the time of issue, I was an excited blushing bride that didn’t think much of the title dependent. Now, 10 years of marriage, 7 moves, 4 combat tours, 3 children, and one recruiting tour later, I respectfully request permission to add an “independent” before that dependent.

Our military life is our greatest gift because no one knows the pride of belonging unless you have served or been along for the ride.  The Commandant of the Marine Corps equipped us with a combat multiplier to be successful on the battlefield, no matter where your appointed battlefield is: home, Afghanistan, a MEU off the coast of Libya.  The Marine Corps’ Family Readiness Program has been a catalyst for my independence, whether it is a referral about the vast educational resources to help me earn my degree or the comforting phone call during the hard moments of a deployment.  The idea that WE are never alone in our journey makes me feel like I am guarded by the body armor of the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

By using all of those resources available in our community, we can all have an improved quality of life while serving our country in whatever billet we hold, whether we are the Marine, the spouse, a veteran or loved one.  There is a little bit of independence in all of us mil ID holders, the question is what resource will help you reach your goals?

Think of me as your Family Readiness Officer, you are one email away from getting the information you need-my inbox is waiting.
Thrive in your military life!
