A Walk in the Woods

December 22, 2011
By Jessica Bass

Going to the gym has gotten a little monotonous these past few weeks, especially since my husband had an upcoming CFT he wanted to lose some extra weight for. We had been going on 3-mile runs on a treadmill at our gym and following up with 15 minutes in the sauna. Every. Single. Day. I was bored.

MCA

My blog has been so focused on weight loss, health, and dieting that I never even paused to discuss the mental changes that are already happening. I get it; I’m going to have to leave everything behind. My time here at the MCA is so precious to me that I can’t even fathom leaving this place.

When I got this job I was so proud to be working for a company that is “devoted to providing professional development and selected services to Marines.” All I’ve wanted to do is help people serving our country and I now do that every day. It is extremely gratifying.

Thanksgiving Catastrophe

November 30, 2011
By Jessica Bass

Ok, ok. I totally failed at my diet this week. I went home for Thanksgiving, and I went to see my entire family (scattered through the state of Florida). I broke every rule possible. I feel like such a glutton, and I hope this didn’t set me back too far.

Thanksgiving Day went alright. We ate at my mother’s house. I weighed out my turkey and measured my green beans. I gave myself one tablespoon of things that weren’t on my diet. I even skipped on pie! I was so proud of myself.

Thanksgiving this year is going to be abbreviated because of my diet. The last appointment I had with the doctor was an extra 30 minutes just to discuss exactly how to eat Thanksgiving food. I can actually eat everything on the table to some degree. What happens before and after the holiday, though, is up to us.

Husband

Throughout this whole weight loss journey, my wonderful husband has been with me every step of the way. He’s been my nutritionist (until I replaced him with the doctor), my personal trainer, and my all-around supportive crutch since the very beginning.

Birthday Ball Festivities!

November 10, 2011
By Jessica Bass

First and foremost, let me just say: Happy birthday, Marines!

Here at the MCA we will be enjoying our own little celebration. This year, I’ll be reading Lejeune’s message. I am so excited. I’ve never had an opportunity like this. It’s become sort of a family affair, too. My husband is going to be the youngest Marine at the MCA celebration. If only my German Shepherd Dog was a bulldog.

It’s working!

Every morning I wake up and eat a hard-boiled egg. Three hours later, I consume obscene amounts of Greek yogurt with fruit. For lunch, I get to scarf down nearly half a pound of food. A little later, I munch on some cheese. By dinner time, I’m so stuffed I can hardly fit the rest in. By doing this I’ve lost 7 pounds since last Thursday.

Buckling Down

This whole adventure I’ve experienced with trying to get into OCS has been amazing. I’ve lost a ton of weight, and I’ve learned how great it feels to be healthy. The last chapter in this story is beginning on Thursday.

I’m a sucker for a good deal, so when LivingSocial offered a coupon for a 2 week doctor-oriented weight loss program, I dove right in. I’ve been paying attention to what I eat for over a year now, but at the end of this road it has become increasingly difficult to pass up that last slice of pizza.

Dear Netflix...

Dear Netflix, I just wanted to thank you for having an app for streaming video. I can now be lazy and productive at the same time.

When I first decided I wanted to go to OCS, I followed the same steps I used when I was trying to find a college and major when I got out of high school. I bought books. Lots and lots of books. I read about OCS itself, and I read about how officers are expected to conduct themselves. I read about the ASVAB and how to find a recruiter. I watched documentaries of candidates going through OCS and TBS. One thing I neglected to learn about, though, was what officers actually do.
