Women in Combat Arms

January 25, 2013

Let’s get something straight: the courage and commitment of women Marines are not an issue.

From helo pilots to up-gunners to crew chiefs to running convoys; Women Marines have participated in more combat in Iraq and Afghanistan than in any American war – and they’ve performed admirably.

But Sect Panetta’s announcement opens the worlds of infantry, artillery, and armor to women for the first time, and the commentators, blogs, and discussion boards are extremely unhappy; ‘using the military to push social engineering’ is one of the more polite phrases used. Are they correct?

President Barack Obama’s recent announcement giving the children of illegal immigrants the opportunity to work and the outraged reaction of the GOP made me step back and think “what makes someone an American?” Is it an accident of birth? Having a special skill? Or is it an attitude?

Immigration didn’t use to be a political issue; people were accepted or denied on their merits. In those human waves of immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island were my grandparents, who came to the New World for a chance for a better life.

There is no such thing as a casualty-free war; and fortunately for the America, there are a select few who accept the most austere conditions in believing our country is worth defending.

The recent decision by the L.A. Times to publish the photographs of American soldiers posing with Talib body parts re-ignited the firestorm raised by the Marine urination photographs: is the American media anti-military and putting our troops at risk, are, were the newspapers standing up to Pentagon pressure and to be commended for demonstrating the value of a free press, or are these acts excusable due to the stress the Marines and soldiers are experiencing?

The Haditha Shootings

On Sunday an IED blast in Ramadi killed 10, and their deaths made front page news. That’s quite a change from 2005, when some 12,000 Iraqi’s were killed, along with 942 Americans – that was 1,100 deaths monthly, or 37 every day of the year. Also in Sunday’s news was that SSGT Frank Wuterich’s trial had finally started, for allegedly shooting civilians in Haditha.

For good or bad, the Marine Corps is downsizing, along with the rest of the Armed Forces. The Marines will be cut from 202K down to 185K and current rumors are swirling of additional cuts down to 175K.

The best-managed companies take advantage of all options open to them, and that includes hiring the most talented people available. One wonders, therefore, why more companies aren’t hiring veterans – there are certainly enough of them looking for work.

Today we call the roll.

The Barbary Coast – Harpers Ferry – The Boxer Rebellion – Belleau Wood – Guadalcanal – Iwo Jima – Chosin Reservoir – Khe Sanh – An Nasiriyah – Fallujah – Marjah…

Today is the day we honor those who fought to protect this United States: the American veteran, the United States Marine.

310 million Americans – 202K Marines. Remember those numbers.

10 November; the day we recognize those who make up the Marine Corps. I want to thank you active-duty Marines for your service, for your deployments, and your future deployments. And you older Marines- your past service is part of the tradition and history being honored today. Spouses – it’s your patience with your husbands and wives that enables them to be put in the time and dedication being a Marine requires.

A 9/11 Reminisce

Bucks County, Pa. Like everyone else in the New York, New Jersey area, I remember the startling clarity of the day. Picture-perfect blue skies when I left for work, but heartbreaking later that morning as we watched the two towers collapse and the thick black smoke, billowing straight up and soiling the sky.
