Leatherneck's Famous Marine Quotes

"I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold."

- Marine 2dLt Clifton B. Cates, 96th Co., 19 July 1918, 1045 a.m., from records of the U.S. 2d Division (Regular)

Gyrene Joke

Sergeants Stick Together

Three Sergeants stationed in China before WWII knew that the Colonel did not tolerate anyone being late for morning roll call. One morning all three were late.

Sgt. No. 1 told the Colonel he could not get a cab so he hired a horse and buggy to bring him to Marine Barracks. On the way the horse died and he had to walk and that is why he was late.

Sgt. No. 2 told the exact story, word for word. The Colonel was peeved and thought if the next Sgt. tells the same story they would regret telling their Colonel such an asinine tale.

Sgt No. 3 told the Colonel he took a cab back to the barracks but the road was blocked with dead horses so he had to walk.
