3d Battalion, 9th Marines Reactivated

On 20 May, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines (3/9) was officially reactivated at Camp Lejeune. The battalion had been reactivated on 7 December 2007 in order to support the ongoing war on terror.

Prior to the unit’s deactivation in 1994, 3/9’s battle history included fighting on Iwo Jima in 1945 and being the first battalion-sized organization to land in Vietnam in 1965. The battalion’s last operation was in Somalia during Operation RESTORE HOPE in 1992.
